Seoul Night Walk: Samseong Sunrise Park

Samseong Sunrise Park in Gangnam-gu Gangnam-gu District has created the upper space of Samseong and Bongeun drainage as Samseong Sunrise Park.

Samseong Sunrise Park in Gangnam-gu Gangnam-gu District has created the upper space of Samseong and Bongeun drainage, located at 82 Samseong-dong, as a hot spot for Han River views, as Samseong Sunrise Park.

An official from the district explained, “Originally, this is a facility to supply water sources to Seoul citizens, and the green space at the upper part of the drainage area was planned to be closed due to complaints from local residents and difficulties in management, but the district has invested 1.5 billion won to turn it into a convenient space for residents.”

From the observatory, you can see Lotte Tower, Jamsil Sports Complex, Olympic Boulevard, and Cheongdam Bridge along with the scenery of the Han River. In addition, grass plazas and deck shelters in the park are used as healing spaces.

The park access road, which had created a desolate atmosphere with old retaining walls and asphalt, has been repaved and 26 trees, including blue angel, and 30 kinds of flowers have been planted to create a new trail where visitors can enjoy various scenery every season.

Walking through the garden of Deoksugung Palace #seoul #seoulmysoul

Deoksugung was originally the residence of Grand Prince Wolsan, the older brother of King Seongjong. This residence became a royal ‘palace’ during the Imjin war after all of the other palaces were burned in 1592 during the Imjin wars. King Seonjo was the first #joseon king to reside at the palace. King Gwanghaegun was crowned in this palace in 1608, and renamed it Gyeongun-gung (경운궁, 慶運宮) in 1611. After the official palace was moved to the rebuilt #changdeokgung in 1618, it was mostly used as an auxiliary palace was renamed Seogung (West Palace). During its history, it alternated between being a royal residential palace and a temporary residence.

Gojong of Joseon ordered the restoration of #Gyeongungung from August 1896.

In 1897, after the period when Emperor Gojong took refuge in the Russian legation, he returned to this place and named it Gyeongungung again. The Government used 80,000 Dollars for constructing and expanding the facilities of the palace. In 1900, electricity and fencing was installed. After Emperor #Gojong abdicated the throne to Emperor #Sunjong, he continued to live in this palace. In 1904, a fire destroyed some of the buildings. The palace was then renamed Deoksugung in 1907, as a reference to a wish for longevity of the emperor. Emperor Gojong died in #Hamnyeongjeon.

Under Japanese rule after 1910, the palace grounds were operated as a public park, the territory was reduced to one-third and the number of buildings to one-tenth of the original.

Walking Seoul at the Cheonggyecheon Stream at night time.

Originally, the Cheonggyecheon Stream flowed naturally, with water cascading from Inwangsan Mountain. While it served as a local resource for Seoul, it also posed a hazard to residents during monsoon seasons, often causing flooding.

During the Joseon Dynasty, efforts were made to update and reconstruct the riverside, aiming to facilitate easier usage. However, the river’s condition deteriorated during the Japanese occupation from 1910 to 1945, becoming polluted and unsightly.

Following the Korean War in 1953, urbanization led to increased pollution as more people moved to the city of Seoul, exacerbating the problem. Subsequently, in 1958, construction commenced to cover the river entirely with an elevated motorway, effectively concealing it from view for the next 25 years.

However, in 2003, Mayor of Seoul Lee Myung Bak initiated a project to remove the highway and restore the Cheonggyecheon stream. The full impact of this endeavor only became apparent upon completion of the construction. As the road was dismantled and nature reintroduced to downtown Seoul, along with the pumping of 120,000 tonnes of water, the restoration project yielded numerous benefits for both locals and the city of Seoul
